Not like right now, but probably within a year. I was talking to my parents about renewing my lease at my apartment, and they reminded me that I have ridiculously good credit a nd a typical mortgage is similar to my current rent. And I was like... whoa. They’re right. So.... yeah.
Needless to say, I immediately went on Zillow and found this ridiculously weird house that I wish was in my budget because just look at it: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
I’m sure I’ll get a nice one when the time comes, anyway.

ya that would be a $2.69 million house around these parts.

Ohhhh that's nice. I wish homes in the $ 200k’s were within my area code.

I love it. Every house needs at least one tower. How else are you going to defend against the undead horde? Plus those overhanging windows are perfect for pouring boiling oil on their zombie noggins.
Best of all, NO BOWL SINKS!

I bought my first house for $160,000
That’ll never happen again :(

Damn, Georgia is like an 80% off sale compared to here.

That’s only a couple of miles from our place. Cool house, but go a couple of miles north to get into Gwinnett. Better roads, better schools and better parks than Dekalb.

Ah, soon, you will know the joys of paying for attic pest removal yourself, instead of the convenience of having a landlord totally ignore it.

Good luck. Just be sure that you’re factoring in all of the extra expenses of owning versus renting. When we went from an apartment to a house, we suddenly had to deal with quarterly bills for water, trash, and sewer. That's an extra $250 every 3 months.

Everyone will tell you about maintenance, taxes, blah blah blah. Don’t forget transfer tax and realtor fees. Just make sure it’s a place you can either get really cheap or will stay in for 7+ years.

2 things:
1. That house looks like it needs a ton of maintenance.
2. Make sure you have a significant emergency fund in place.

We had a $45 0 water bill one quarter from our son leaving on a hose we didn’t know about... Set up a water monitor immediately afterwards haha.

Well, in Southern NM it will. $160,ooo will get a lower quality new construction 3/4 bedroom with ~1600ish square feet, or better quality older construction in an descent neighborhood.

That looks closer to a down payment than to a purchase price :(

That’s cheap.
*Stone Mountain*
That would probably be $600,000 at least in my Atlanta suburban area.

If Rainbow has kids in the near future, 30 years from now, they can tell everyone they went to Mill Creek High School, the largest high school in Georgia!

That house is literally a down payment on a mid-range place in Seattle - sub 2K sq.ft. That being said, that place is gonna take 300K to put right - let’s just say it wouldn’t be a great choice for a first time homebuyer. Especially since you’d then need to heat and cool 6K sq.ft.
Remember in real estate, all the money is made on the purchase. Buying an older home, or one that needs cosmetics can save big bucks, especially if you’re willing to do some work
.

Take everyone’s sarcastic/serious “the added costs! you are responsible for XXX!” comments with a grain of salt. Yeah, you’re responsible for all the things that as a renter you weren’t, but renting is throwing your money away. Even if you buy a house that doesn’t appreciate much in value, it’s still value/equity for you. My wife says that shit all the time about how she misses renting and I’m thinking, “Yeah, it’s easier. But we were throwing away nearly $45,000 a year paying rent versus paying $36,000 on a mortgage for a much bigger place.”
That all being said, I love a good quirky house, but that one is way too dated. If it were aesthetically updated but kept all the oddness about it, I’d love it.

Sure, but you're probably already paying for some of that if you're renting an apartment. I was mainly referring to the things that you don't think about when renting. But an electric bill shouldn't be new.

that house is hideous.

You just gotta factor in losing 10% of your equity based on buying and selling fees. Factor in interest and, well...
I’ve owned several homes and have lost money on all of them even though they appreciated in price while I owned them. Almost every time it would have cost the same in absolute dollars to rent.

That house is ridiculous. I want it.
